Forty Days of Lent – Day 12

Give us this day our Daily Bread…

Not just for me, but for all of us. Not for the long-term, but day by day by day.  When I think about these words I can’t help but think about a flower growing out of a crack in a parking lot.  If you ever want to know more about relying on God, study closely the next one that you see.  Right in the middle of acres and acres of asphalt, sprouts tender green leaves; and as you come closer you can see that the leaves are surrounding the tiny head of a purple pansy or a white daisy or maybe even a bright yellow dandelion.   It is awe-inspiring – how much trust these tiny bits of life contain.  Even in the midst of the bleakest of circumstances, these barely noticeable members of creation struggle, every moment of every day, reaching and straining to tap into the energy all around them so that they might grow into their full potential.  These tiny flowers pray a persistent prayer that expresses a deep trust that God will provide what is needed; reverently recognizing God as the final source of all things, and humbly demonstrating to us that regardless of our human efforts and our systems of society – not one single thing exists or is available for us – but by God’s will. Give us this day our daily bread…
